Roberto Enrique Clemente Walker was a great...GREAT...ballplayer. But he might have been an even better person. The .317 career hitter played all of his 18 MLB seasons (1955-1972) with the Pittsburgh Pirates, his famous #21 having been retired by the Club. He also was inducted posthumously to the Hall of Fame in 1973, an exception to the five-year retirement rule. A 2x WS Champ, 15x All-Star, 12x Gold Glove, 4x NL Batting Champion, 3,000 Hit Club Member and NL MVP, Roberto was the first Latin America and Caribbean player to win a World Series as a starter, receive NL & World Series MVP Awards, and be elected to the HOF. But Roberto was much more than just a great baseball player. He was heavily involved in charity work in Puerto Rico and Latin American and Caribbean countries during the off seasons, often delivering baseball equipment and food to those in need. Sadly, he died in an aviation accident on December 31, 1972, while in route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Today, in his honor, MLB presents the Roberto Clemente Award every year to the player best combining outstanding baseball with active community involvement. A fitting tribute to one of baseball's all-time greats.
