- The Bay Bridge Series is a Bay Area institution...at least since 1989. That was the year the Oakland Athletics first played the San Francisco Giants, amazingly in the World Series. Such was born The Bay Bridge Series (sometimes also called "The Battle of the Bay"). It was also the name given to a series of preseason games after Spring Training ended and before the start of the regular season. And, since 1997 when interleague play started, it is the name given to the annual contests between the two teams...with a special trophy going to the winning squad.
